The Philips PM5638 Component Color Coder SPG is a compact, highly stable encoder and SPG for professional applications in, for example, television studios, program production, and TV labs. The PM5638 encodes critical signal sources in analog component format, such as for VTRs and cameras, into PAL or NTSC formats. The built-in studio SPG can function as a stand-alone master SPG or as a slave genlocked to the house synchronization.
The Component Color Coder encodes an analog component signal to composite. For genlock, only a sync is needed, since the PM 5638 has its own built-in SPG. This special feature distinguishes the PM5638 from other encoders which require a separate SPG for timing signals. The PM5638 also functions as a stand-alone SPG.
The standard PM5638 handles two formats. Internal jumper selection sets the instrument to RGB orto Y, R-Y, B-Y. The SMPTE/EBU format (Y, P_B, P_R) is covered by Y, R-Y, B-Y; YRGB/ RGB and RGB/RGB.
The PM5638 also functions as a stand-alone sync pulse generator. Without inputs, the unit supplies a correctly timed Sc-H phased black burst signal (house synchronization) for timing signal processing.
The PM5638 can also be genlocked to an external sync reference, either a black burst, a composite video signal, or simply a monochrome sync. With a monochrome sync, the user can choose either a free-running subcarrier or a subcarrier locked to sync. This outstanding facility is especially useful when component coded sig­nals are converted into composite signals. In this mode, correct Sc-H phase is maintained.
All frequencies, timings, amplitudes, as well as rise and fall times, are firmly within the most stringent broadcasting standards and practices.
A front panel int/ext sync switch selects the mode of operation between internal or master SPG, and external or genlocked as a slave SPG. High internal accuracy is maintained through the use of a TCXO. In external mode, the SPG automatically switches to internal mode if the external reference is lost for any reason. If this should occur, an LED on the front panel indicates the missing external reference.

When the instrument is delivered it is set-up for the version ordered. Changing the instrument from one version to another requires component changes, altering of X-tal frequencies and other circuit modifications (see: service manual - programming plugs).
